Common Austin AC Problems and Solutions

June 13, 2016

Last year we published some of the most common air conditioning problems Austin faces, but today we are here to tell you about some frequent air conditioner troubles that you can help troubleshoot.

The A/C is on but not putting out cool air.

If your A/C system is running but not actually cooling, you might need to have your refrigerant levels examined. Refrigerant is needed to make sure the air coming out of your AC is really cool and keeps your family comfortable. Low refrigerant is frequently a sign of a leak or that the system wasn’t charged correctly.

An easy way to check if you are low on refrigerant is to go out to your air conditioning system and find the two copper pipes. If the bigger pipe is “sweating” or covered in condensation, put your hand on the pipe and feel if it’s cold. If it feels cold, you are most likely good to go and won’t need extra refrigerant.

If you’re not positive or the pipe is not giving off condensation and is not cold when you place your hand on it, call Strand Brothers Service Experts and we’ll pay you a visit and examine your refrigerant levels and find out why your air conditioner is not blowing cool air. Remember, only an EPA Certified technician should handle refrigerant for central A/C systems, due to the dangers of handling this potentially dangerous chemical.

You air condenser fan isn’t rotating.

There are several reasons your condenser fan isn’t rotating. One is that it just burned out and you need a replacement. Humidity generally causes more condensation so another issue could be that the water is not draining right or that the drain is obstructed. If you can check for these things, you may be able to discover the problem; but, if not, give Strand Brothers Service Experts a call and we can look into what has stopped your condenser fan from turning and go over your options to get your A/C system problem corrected.

Your air conditioning system is not providing sufficient air cooling.

The first step is to try lowering your thermostat. It seems absurd but sometimes our busy lives cause us to miss the obvious. If that doesn’t get your home cooling and comfortable again, check and replace the air filter. If the air filter is obstructed, it could cause major cooling problems. Another problem that could cause your lack of cooling is an A/C system that is not sized correctly, and unfortunately this is a very common issue when homes are built. Strand Brothers Service Experts is happy to come out and complete an analysis to confirm whether or not the size of your A/C system is causing your issues.

AC shuts on and off constantly

If your A/C system is short cycling, or turning on or off constantly, it could mean one of a few things. One thing is that your condenser or evaporator is blocked or dirty and in need of cleaning. Once the equipment is cleaned and all obstructions moved out of the way, you may be back to a regular running air conditioner. Keep in mind that humidity also plays a role so if the house cools to the correct temperatures, but then the humidity causes your home to heat up quickly, this could cause an on-again, off-again AC because it’s having to work overtime to keep your family cool and comfortable.

No matter your issue, whatever common or uncommon A/C trouble you run into, Strand Brothers Service Experts is here for you 24/7/365. We are available all the time so we can get your AC system cooling and get your comfortable quickly.
