Common Austin AC Problems and Solutions

Last year we published a few of the most common air conditioning problems Austin faces, but today we are here to tell you about some frequent air conditioner troubles that you can help troubleshoot.

Your air conditioner is on but not putting out cool air.

If your A/C system is running but not actually cooling, you may need to have your refrigerant levels examined. Refrigerant is needed to make sure the air blowing from the system is actually cool and keeps your family comfortable. Low refrigerant is frequently an indicator of a leak or that the system wasn’t charged correctly.

An easy way to check if you are low on refrigerant is to find the two copper pipes on your AC system. If the bigger pipe is “sweating” or covered in condensation, put your hand on the pipe and feel if it’s cold. If it feels cold, you are probably good to go and won’t need extra refrigerant.

Note: only an EPA Certified technician should handle refrigerant for central air conditioning systems, due to the dangers of handling this potentially dangerous chemical.

You air condenser fan isn’t rotating.

There are many reasons your condenser fan isn’t rotating. One is that it just burned out and you require a replacement. Humidity generally causes more condensation so another problem to look out for is that the water is not draining right or that the drain is obstructed. If you can check for these things, you may be able to discover the problem; but, if not, give Strand Brothers Service Experts a call and we can look into what has stopped your condenser fan from turning and go over your options to get your A/C system problem corrected.

Your air conditioning system is not providing sufficient air cooling.

The first step is to try decreasing the temperature on your thermostat. It seems absurd but sometimes our busy lives cause us to miss the obvious. If that doesn’t get your home cooling and comfortable again, check and replace the air filter. If the air filter is obstructed, it could cause major cooling problems. Another thing that could cause your lack of cooling is an AC that is not sized properly, and unfortunately this is an all-too-common issue when homes are constructed. AC shuts on and off constantly

If your A/C system is short cycling, or turning on or off constantly, it could mean one of a few things. One thing is that your condenser or evaporator is blocked or dirty and needs to be cleaned. Once the equipment is cleaned and all obstructions moved out of the way, you may be back to a regular running AC. Keep in mind that humidity also plays a role so if the house cools to the correct temperatures, but then the humidity causes your home to heat up quickly, it could result in an on-again, off-again system because it’s having to work overtime to keep your family cool and comfortable.
