Envision it: you are packing up your things at the office and miles away at your home, the range powers on to make dinner. The AC system is notified and makes adjustments to deliver more cool air to counteract the oven’s additional heat. When you get home the lights automatically turn on as you come in the door, dinner is ready, and your home is at a comfortable temperature.
That’s the goal! And also the kind of advanced home interconnectivity that is accessible now and 2017 could be a pivotal year for advancements in how your home’s HVAC system functions as part of the team.
“Smart phones radically changed our lives in part because they allowed thousands of apps to make our lives easier and richer,” said Rob Haines, Marketing Manager for Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning. “We forecast that in 2017, developers will be centering on more new apps that let all of your home’s systems and appliances interact opposed to being siloed, and this will include breakout new advancements in how your home’s heating and air conditioning system work.”
Smart thermostats and newer, updated HVAC systems can already send messages to you about energy utilization and standard maintenance such as air filter replacement. Future systems might even be able to determine a likely equipment failure before it happens and notify your heating and cooling repair company to call you and set up a technician’s visit. The technician will arrive with prior knowledge about the issue and the needed parts to repair it.
Another work in progress is the use of infrared heat sensing in the home that will determine which rooms are in use by residents and actually send heating and cooling specifically to those regions.
“Zoned heating and air conditioning systems have been one of the quickest growing parts of the HVAC industry for quite a few years, and that will remain a large opportunity,” said Haines. “Furthermore, systems will focus on heating and cooling specific rooms or groups of rooms as needed to improve comfort and energy efficiency.”
And yes, Haines adds, the millennials are driving the trends for at-home connectivity and more efficient heating and cooling systems. “As millennials purchase their homes, they want their home systems like heating and air conditioning to not only do what they are told, but to monitor and adjust themselves and to proactively communicate with the homeowner. We also notice that the millennials and Generation X are much more conscience about energy efficiency and those implications of their HVAC systems.”
